NHL Week 14: Chaos, Comebacks, Knockouts and a Teenager Taking Over the League
NHL Week 14 25/26 Recap – Chaos, Records & Pure Madness
If you were looking for a calm, predictable stretch of hockey, Week 14 of the NHL season was not for you.
This week had it all: fan bases booing their own players, jerseys flying onto the ice, goalies completely disappearing from games, heavyweight fights ending in knockouts — and right in the middle of it all, a teenager who looks like the best player in the world on certain nights.
The NHL is officially a dramatic mess right now. And it has been incredible to watch.
Let’s break down everything that went down in Week 14.
Montreal, Pittsburgh and the Kings of Overtime
We kick things off with the Montreal Canadiens, aka the Cardiac Kids. Against Dallas, Lane Hutson showed exactly how not to defend him. He was given so much space that he could’ve pitched a tent, started a family, and grown old before ending the game himself.
Montreal continues to dominate 3-on-3 overtime and sits at 9–1 in OT, the best mark in the league. With that much young talent, it checks out.
In Pittsburgh, something unexpected is happening: resilience. Down 4–1 to Columbus, the Penguins scored three unanswered goals, including the tying goal with 12 seconds left. And when that happens, you already know who’s coming over the boards in overtime.
Sidney Crosby. Fresh legs. Ice in his veins.
Game over. Five straight wins for the Penguins and suddenly, they’re back in the conversation.
Injuries, Boos and Cracks in the Armor
The bad injury news keeps coming. Gabriel Landeskog went hard into the post and is expected to miss more time — a brutal blow after such a remarkable comeback. On top of that, the defending champions showed they’re human after all, suffering just their third regulation loss of the season.
Meanwhile in New Jersey, things are getting uncomfortable. Luke Hughes had a nightmare game: an own goal, a brutal turnover, and relentless boos every time he touched the puck. The Devils fell 3–1 to Carolina, and the pressure is officially on.
Vegas Slipping, Chicago Surging
Vegas continues to raise questions. First in the division, but now riding a five-game losing streak. Chicago took full advantage, led by Tyler Bertuzzi, who delivered a legacy game with a hat trick and the overtime winner.
If the Blackhawks can hang around until Bedard fully takes over again, the scriptwriters might just get their wish.
Goalie Chaos and a Historic Collapse
Week 14 was especially cruel to goaltenders.
Igor Shesterkin left the Rangers’ game with a knee injury, forcing Jonathan Quick into action — and into immediate chaos in the crease.
But nothing compared to what happened in New Jersey later in the week. A 9–0 loss to the Islanders, a jersey thrown onto the ice, and head coach Sheldon Keefe leaving his goalie in for all nine goals.
The result? The worst Goals Saved Above Expected performance in a single game since tracking began in 2007. A moment that could cost a locker room.
Heavyweight Hockey: Title Fight Ends in a Knockout
In San Jose, we got the heavyweight tilt everyone wanted. Mathieu Olivier vs. Ryan Reaves. Pure chaos. Bombs thrown on both sides. In the end, Olivier drops Reaves with a clean knockout.
New heavyweight champion crowned.
The Sharks kept rolling, Celebrini extended his point streak, and San Jose continues to be one of the most entertaining young teams in the league.
Macklin Celebrini: Still a Teenager, Already a Star
It needs repeating: Macklin Celebrini is still a teenager.
Against the Kings, he tied the game late with a solo effort, then dominated overtime by creating a turnover and setting up the game winner. Three points on the night, a 12-game point streak, and complete control of the game.
This kid is generational. The future in San Jose is very, very teal.
The Atlantic Division Is Absolute Madness
Detroit keeps winning.
Buffalo refuses to cool off.
Tampa Bay has won nine straight games — and still isn’t leading the division.
Montreal crushed Florida 6–2 and jumped into first place. Toronto looks rejuvenated after coaching changes. Every single point feels massive, even though we’re only in mid-January.
Jets, Ducks and the Free Fall
The Jets hit an 11-game losing streak. The Ducks lost nine straight. Both teams looked electric early in the season, and now they’re completely out of answers.
Adjustments by opponents, young rosters, and confidence issues are all catching up at once.
Final Thoughts: Perfect Chaos
Week 14 was NHL hockey in its purest form.
Boos. Jerseys on the ice. Injuries. Comebacks. Knockouts. Superstars. Teenagers stealing the show.
This season makes absolutely no sense — and that’s exactly why it’s must-watch.
