Hockey Stick Balance: Why Two Sticks of the Same Weight Feel Completely Different

Two sticks, both 365 grams on the scale. One feels light in your hand, the other feels like a shovel by the second intermission. They weigh exactly the same – and still, only one of them feels right.

The reason isn't on any spec sheet: it's not about how much mass a stick has, but where that mass sits.

The difference between weight and swing weight

Take a hammer by the handle and swing it. Then turn it around, hold it by the head and swing again. Same tool, same weight – but the second swing takes no effort. The same thing happens with a stick, just more subtly.

What you feel out on the ice isn't the weight, it's the swing weight: the resistance the stick puts up when you rotate it around your hands. And that depends disproportionately on how far the mass sits from your hands. Roughly speaking: one gram at the blade tip costs you several times the effort of one gram sitting right under your top hand.

That's why the scale on its own is a poor adviser. A 375-gram stick with its mass close to your hands can feel quicker than a 365-gram stick with a heavy blade.

How to measure the balance point – 30 seconds, no tools

  • Lay the stick across your outstretched index finger.
  • Slide it back and forth until it stays level on its own. That's the balance point.
  • Measure from there to the top end of the shaft.

That single number tells you more about how a stick plays than the weight does. The bigger it is, the further the balance point sits towards the blade – and the more blade-heavy the stick feels. Measure your current stick before you order a new one; that way you have a reference value instead of a gut feeling.

What actually shifts the balance point

The third and fourth rows surprise most people. Cut a stick down and you make it lighter and more blade-heavy at the same time – because what you remove is exactly the counterweight at the top end. Add an extension and you make it heavier but better balanced: the 25 to 45 grams of the extension sit behind your top hand and pull the balance point back towards you.

That's also why a carbon extension feels different from a stick that was longer to begin with, even though both end up the same length.

The blade is the biggest lever

Of all the parts, the blade sits furthest from your hands. That's why every gram out there hits hardest – and why switching from a standard blade to a Max blade is the biggest change you can make to the balance feel without changing models.

The extra 15 to 25 grams are nothing on the scale – a good five percent of the total weight. In your hands it's the difference between “quick” and “I'll have to get used to this”. So if you want a bigger blade, plan on two or three practices before you judge it.

What this means for choosing a model

Our models sit between 365 and 400 grams – a spread of 35 grams. That sounds like very little, and it's still the difference between the lightest and the heaviest stick in the range:

Worth keeping in mind: weight is saved by leaving material out. A very light shaft has thinner walls and is therefore more vulnerable to hits on the edge. If you work the corners a lot, you're often better off with 375 grams than with the lightest model.

Why no manufacturer publishes balance figures

Quite simply: there is no standard for it. Every manufacturer measures differently, or not at all – and because the value changes with every centimetre you cut off and every layer of tape, a number on the packaging would only ever be half the truth. That's the same reason we don't publish one.

What we recommend instead: measure your current stick with the finger test, write the number down and compare it with the new one. It's messier than a spec sheet, but it describes exactly what you notice on the ice.
