Roman Josi's Stick: P28 Max Custom, 95 Flex, CCM Jetspeed – and Which SOYUZ Fits
Last updated: 29.10.2026 · by Andri Farrer
Roman Josi is the highest-scoring Swiss-born player in NHL history, the only Swiss Norris Trophy winner and captain of the Nashville Predators since 2017. And he uses a blade you can't buy off the shelf. A defenseman with an open face and a toe hook? Sounds more like a winger. That's exactly what makes Josi's setup interesting. Here are his specs – and the SOYUZ that gets you closest to his blade.
The short answer
Curve: a P28 Max custom – the P28 shape at max height: open face, clear toe hook, taller blade.
Flex: 95. Shot: left. Stick: CCM Jetspeed.
The right alternative at SOYUZ: P28M or P28 +1/4 – both on every SOYUZ model from a single stick, and the P28M is also in stock on the AURORA.
Roman Josi's stick specs
- Curve: P28 Max custom – open face, pronounced toe hook
- Blade: max height
- Flex: 95
- Shot: left (LH)
- Stick: CCM Jetspeed FT5 (pro stock); Reebok and Easton early in his career, CCM ever since
- Shaft length: 64 inches (approx. 163 cm)
- Size: 185 cm / 91 kg (6'1", 201 lb)
- Team: Nashville Predators (2008 draft, 38th overall), previously SC Bern
The main source is Hockeystickman's spec check (February 2025): CCM Jetspeed FT5, 95 flex, 64-inch shaft, max blade and a custom curve with a “notably open face and a decent toe hook” that resembles the P28. In a nutshell: Josi uses a P28 Max custom – the P28 shape at max height, slightly modified for him. Pros often have their blades tweaked a little, so there's no 1:1 copy at retail – but the base shape is available.
The curve: open, toe hook, max height
For a defenseman, that's unusual. Classic D-man blades tend to be flatter or mid curves: clean passes, controlled slap shots from the blue line. But Josi isn't a classic defenseman. He's the fourth forward – he walks the line with the puck, looks for a shooting lane and fires wristers and snap shots on the move. That's exactly what an open toe curve is built for: the puck rolls to the toe and gets up quickly – even over sticks and legs in the shooting lane.
The max blade fits that picture. The taller blade gives you more surface for passes along the boards, hard rims and bouncing pucks. At the blue line, where plenty of passes don't arrive flat, that's a real advantage.

The SOYUZ alternative: P28M or P28 +1/4
There is no 1:1 copy of Josi's blade – not even at CCM retail. The right alternative is the max version of the P28: at SOYUZ, the P28M or the P28 +1/4. They correspond to the Bauer P28M, the CCM P28 + 1/4 and the Warrior W28 Max, and you can get both on every SOYUZ model from a single stick. The numbers from our Curve Lab, compared with the regular P28:
| Curve (CAD) | Length mm | Height mm | Curve depth mm | Opening mid | Opening toe |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SOYUZ P28M | 277.4 | 78.2 | 14.6 | 5.7° | 12.1° |
| SOYUZ P28 | 273.1 | 74.1 | 11.2 | 5.6° | 11.6° |
What the numbers show: the P28M is 4.1 mm taller than the P28 – that's the max blade Josi uses. It's also slightly longer with a deeper curve, and the toe opens a little more (12.1° vs 11.6°). Lie values are deliberately left out of the table: our standard blades have the same lie as Bauer and CCM. More on that in the lie guide.
Want to dig deeper? In the Curve Lab you'll find further modified versions of the P28 Max alongside the P28M and P28 +1/4 – for example in other lie options. Overlay them and pick the shape that comes closest to Josi's blade.

The stick: CCM Jetspeed
According to Hockeystickman, Josi has been a CCM player for years, currently on the Jetspeed FT5 Pro. The Jetspeed is CCM's hybrid kick line: the shaft flexes lower or higher depending on your hand position. Quick wristers load fast, while a slap shot with a wide grip still gets plenty of load into the stick. For a defenseman who needs both – a slapper from the point and a quick release after walking in – that makes sense. More on kick points in our kick point guide.
On flex: 95 at 91 kg is stiff – but normal for an NHL defenseman logging more than 24 minutes a night. Our rule of thumb: flex ≈ body weight in kg, and when in doubt go lower. And every centimetre you cut off makes the stick stiffer (cutting or extending). The full chart is in our flex guide.
The player
Born on 1 June 1990 in Bern, with SC Bern from 2006 to 2010, winning the Swiss championship in 2010 – and again in 2013 during the NHL lockout. Nashville drafted him 38th overall in 2008, and he has been the Predators' captain since 2017. In 2020 he became the first Swiss player to win the Norris Trophy as the NHL's best defenseman, and in 2021/22 he set the franchise record with 96 points. Since April 2021 he has been the highest-scoring Swiss-born player in NHL history.
With Switzerland he won World Championship silver in 2013 (as tournament MVP), 2018, 2024 and 2026 on home ice. After a severe concussion in February 2025 he was out for a long time, returned in October 2025 and played his 1,000th NHL game in January 2026 – the first player to play all 1,000 for the Predators. Nine days later came goal number 200. At the 2026 Olympics he captained Switzerland.
Which SOYUZ fits your Josi setup?
The blade: P28M or P28 +1/4 if you want max height like Josi – P28 if you prefer the regular height. The shaft is an easy call:
| His stick | SOYUZ equivalent | Who it's for |
|---|---|---|
| CCM Jetspeed (hybrid kick) | HIT GRIT | All-rounders and offensive defensemen who want a slap shot and a quick release – very close to the Jetspeed feel |
| If you want a faster load | AURORA (low kick) | More wristers, fewer slappers – and the only SOYUZ with the P28M in stock |

In stock: the P28M is in stock on the AURORA in 75 flex, left and right – while supplies last. The regular P28 is in stock on all seven SOYUZ senior models, on the HIT GRIT for example in 75 and 85 flex. Order by 2 pm and in Switzerland the stick usually arrives the next day. See what's available right now in the in-stock collection.
Custom: If you want Josi's combination – HIT GRIT, P28M or P28 +1/4, left shot, 95 flex – configure a custom stick. The P28M and P28 +1/4 are available on every SOYUZ model from a single stick; you choose flex, length and shot freely, delivery 4–6 weeks.
My recommendation: for most amateur defensemen, the HIT GRIT with a P28M or P28 +1/4 in 75 or 85 flex is the best starting point – if you prefer a lower blade, take the regular P28. One thing to know: an open toe curve takes a bit more touch on passes and backhands. If you currently use a P92/P29, check the difference in the Curve Lab first – or read our P28 vs P29 comparison.

Left (LH).
What stick does Josi use?
CCM, currently the Jetspeed FT5 Pro – CCM's hybrid kick line. The SOYUZ equivalent is the HIT GRIT.
What's the difference between the P28 and the P28M?
The P28M is the max version: according to our CAD data it's 4.1 mm taller, slightly longer and more deeply curved. The basic shape with the open toe curve stays the same.
