Nathan MacKinnon's Stick: P92, 95 Flex – and Which SOYUZ Fits

Last updated: 28.10.2026 · by Andri Farrer

Last season Nathan MacKinnon scored 53 goals, won the Rocket Richard Trophy and passed Joe Sakic as the top scorer in Avalanche history. Here's the funny part: the blade he uses most is sold in stores as the «Sakic curve». So which curve does MacKinnon actually use? The internet gives you five different answers. We sorted them out – and show you which SOYUZ stick recreates his setup.

The short answer

Curve: P92 (CCM calls it P29) – the classic mid curve. Earlier in his career he also used a P71 and custom pro stock patterns.

Flex: 95. Shoots: right.

The SOYUZ equivalent is the P29 – in stock in all seven senior models.

Nathan MacKinnon's stick specs

  • Curve: P92 (Bauer) or P29 (CCM) – the same mid curve under two names
  • Flex: 95 (one 2024 source says 87)
  • Shoots: right (RH)
  • Stick: for years the CCM Ribcor Trigger plus CCM Jetspeed pro stocks; since 2023/24 also Bauer (Nexus Tracer, then Nexus Sync)
  • Size: 183 cm / 91 kg
  • Team: Colorado Avalanche (drafted 1st overall in 2013)

Our own pro stick specs list has MacKinnon as RH, 95 flex, P92. That matches a CCM Jetspeed FT5 Pro pro stock listed by Hockeystickman as «P29 – 95 Flex», as well as reports from SidelineSwap (2024: P92) and Hockeystickman («recently switched to the P92»).

To be fair: the picture isn't perfectly clean. Hockeystickman names the P71 as his most common blade from the Ribcor years, a pro stock retailer sells a «MacKinnon curve» (PRO21) that looks more like a Bauer P14, and a 2023 blog talks about a «custom P14». Pros change gear – MacKinnon more than most: according to Hockeystickman he has used ten different graphics from three brands since 2023. But the P92/P29 is the shape that shows up across several independent sources and the one he most likely uses today.

The curve: P92 – P29 at CCM

First, the naming mess: P92 is Bauer's name, P29 is CCM's, Warrior calls it W03. It's the same mid curve. The curve starts in the middle of the blade and runs evenly to a rounded toe with an open face. The result: a quick, controlled release on the move, forgiving pass reception and a backhand that works.

That's exactly MacKinnon's game. He doesn't shoot from the blue line – he shoots at full speed off the rush: wrist shots, snap shots, often with a defender draped on him. That calls for a blade that carries the puck along its full length and still gets it up quickly. An extreme toe curve would be a liability at his speed.

By the way: Joe Sakic never used the P92 that carries his name. «Sakic» is a trade name – MacKinnon uses the blade, the name belongs to the man whose records he is breaking.

The SOYUZ P29: the same mid curve as the Bauer P92 and CCM P29.

The SOYUZ equivalent: P29

At SOYUZ the shape is called P29. We recommend it to everyone coming from a Bauer P92 or CCM P29 – you won't notice a difference in shape. The CAD values from our Curve Lab show why:

Curve (CAD)Length mmHeight mmCurve depth mmFace angle midFace angle toe
SOYUZ P29285.374.212.16.4°11.2°
SOYUZ P92 (CLASSIC SPR)287.774.811.56.2°10.9°

Two to three tenths of a degree difference in face angle – that's the same base shape. We deliberately left lie values out of the table: our standard blades have the same lie as Bauer and CCM. Why lie still matters is explained in the lie guide.

And MacKinnon's other curves?

P71: The SOYUZ P71 is not the same as the CCM P71 – the same number doesn't mean the same blade. So it's no substitute for MacKinnon's P71 from the Ribcor years.

PRO21 («MacKinnon pro stock curve»): The closest match to the PRO21 as listed by prostockhockeysticks.com is, in our view, the SOYUZ P100. It's shorter, lower and clearly more closed than the P29 (CAD: 277.5 mm length, 70.2 mm height, face angle 3.1° mid and 8.0° at the toe). There are several similar shapes though – check the Curve Guide yourself or put the P100 next to the P29 in the 3D Curve Lab. The P100 is available as Pro Custom from 3 sticks, left and right.

The stick: from CCM Ribcor to Bauer Nexus

For years MacKinnon was a CCM Ribcor Trigger player – a low kick stick built for a quick release. He also used CCM Jetspeed pro stocks (hybrid kick), such as the FT5 Pro with P29 and 95 flex. From the 2023/24 season, according to Hockeystickman, the search began: ten graphics, three brands. According to GearGeek he switched from the Bauer Nexus Tracer to the Nexus Sync in May 2025.

What's interesting: the Nexus is a completely different shaft from the Ribcor – more load, more control, more of a stick for powerful shots than for the fastest release. A player with his speed going that way shows there's no single «right» kick point for fast players. More in our kick point guide.

On flex: 95 is stiff for 91 kg body weight, but normal for an NHL center of his strength. Our rule of thumb is flex ≈ body weight in kg, and when in doubt go lower. Don't copy a pro's flex – and remember that every centimetre you cut off makes the stick stiffer (cutting or extending your stick). The flex chart is in our flex guide.

The player

Born 1995 in Halifax, drafted first overall by Colorado in 2013, Calder Trophy 2014. Stanley Cup 2022, Hart Trophy and Ted Lindsay Award 2024. At the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off he was named MVP with four goals in four games, and at the 2026 Olympics his winning goal in the semifinal against Finland sent Canada to the final.

The 2025/26 season was his highest-scoring yet: 53 goals, 127 points in 80 games, the Rocket Richard Trophy and +57. In October 2025 he passed Joe Sakic as the franchise's all-time points leader, and in December 2025 in goals as well. MacKinnon is the prototype of the modern center: explosive first steps, speed through the neutral zone and a shot released at full stride.

Which SOYUZ fits your MacKinnon setup?

The curve is clear: P29. For the shaft, it depends which MacKinnon you want to copy – or better: how you play yourself.

His stickSOYUZ equivalentWho it's for
CCM Ribcor Trigger (low kick)ARCANE, RAPID or AURORAQuick wrist-shot release, lots of shots on the move
CCM Jetspeed (hybrid kick)HIT GRITAll-rounders who want release and slap shot – very close to the Jetspeed feel
Bauer Nexus Tracer / SyncCLASSIC SPRPlayers who load the stick and want control – our only model built on the Nexus principle
SOYUZ HIT GRIT hockey stick, hybrid kick, available in stock with the P29 curve
SOYUZ HIT GRIT: hybrid kick like the CCM Jetspeed – P29 in stock.

In stock: the P29 is in stock in all seven SOYUZ senior models; the HIT GRIT and CLASSIC SPR in 70, 75 and 85 flex, left and right. Order by 2 pm and in Switzerland your stick usually arrives the next day. Everything currently available is in the in-stock collection.

Custom: If you really want MacKinnon-stiff – a right-handed 95 flex, a specific length or your name on the shaft – configure a custom stick. You choose flex, length, handedness and blade freely; the P29 is available on every model from a single stick, delivery 4–6 weeks. As a custom stick, the CLASSIC SPR covers flex 65 to 105 and is also available with the P92 shape.

My recommendation: for most recreational and amateur players the HIT GRIT with P29 in 75 or 85 flex is the best starting point. It's more forgiving than a pure low kick stick, still loads quickly and feels familiar right away if you're coming from a Jetspeed. If, like today's MacKinnon, you prefer a Bauer Nexus, take the CLASSIC SPR.

Currently mainly the P92, i.e. the CCM P29 – the same mid curve. Earlier he also used a P71 and custom pro stock patterns.

What flex does MacKinnon use?

95. One 2024 source says 87 for a Bauer stick – pros vary by model and length.

Is MacKinnon a lefty or a righty?

He shoots right (RH).

What stick does MacKinnon use?

For years the CCM Ribcor Trigger and CCM Jetspeed pro stocks, since 2023/24 also Bauer. According to GearGeek he switched to the Bauer Nexus Sync in May 2025.

Is the P29 the same as the P92?

Yes. P92 is Bauer's name and P29 CCM's for the same mid curve. At SOYUZ it's called P29 and it's in stock.

Why is the P92 called the «Sakic curve» if MacKinnon uses it?

Because blade names are trade names. Joe Sakic never used the P92. MacKinnon does – and in 2025 he passed Sakic as the Avalanche's all-time leading scorer.
